We are only 4 months into 2006 and you could already call this the year of ballroom dancing. Season two of ABC's popular Dancing with the Stars has crowned another winner (Drew Lachey of 'boy band' 98 degrees) and there are two feature films out about Ballroom Dancing. Opening only a week apart, Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School and Take the Lead are putting dancing in the forefront of popular culture. 

Take the Lead starring Antonio Banderas was filmed in Toronto. We at Dance Plus, were excited to be able to provide props for the movie and fit the cast with their dance shoes, with shoes provided by International Dance Shoes of England. In addition to great dancing, this movie inspired by the real life experiences of Pierre Dulaine, contains a wonderful message about the influence of ballroom dance. Read below for more on these new movies.

In music news, we have eleven great new releases to tell you about, including the much anticipated release of Cuban Shing-a-Ling. This CD contains an updated version of Tito Puente's Shing-a-Ling called Shing-a-tin-tin (also known as Brian's Cha Cha after being used by top professionals Brian Watson & Carmen). Despite the name the chorus includes the incredibly catchy phrase of "Shing-a-Ling", and the result is a must-have cha cha. In addition to new Latin and Ballroom releases we also have a new Argentine Tango CD and a hot Salsa CD from Prandi. Enjoy!

Ballroom Dancing Movies - Now Playing!
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School - Stars John Goodman, Marisa Tomei, Mary Steenburgen, Danny Devito and Sean Astin.

Despite it's wordy title, this movie boasts a steller cast and has made appearances at many of the major film festivals. This film expands on the story featured in a short film released 15 years ago. More than just a movie about the power of dancing this movie also centers around the story of a widower who falls in love with a woman, and ballroom dancing, when he keeps a promise to a dying man. Opened March 31. 

Take the Lead - Stars Antonio Banderas, Alfre Woodard, and Rob Brown.

This movie is loosely based on the real life story of Pierre Dulaine, co-founding artistic director of the American Ballroom Theater, who created Dancing Classrooms in 1994 to give underprivileged New York City public school kids the opportunities that ballroom dancing had given him. While the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom (now available on DVD) is a more accurate account of Dulaine's program, this entertaining movie ages the children in question and teaches teenagers some interesting lessons about dance. Opened April 7.
